New ARRL Web Site Up and Running
More Improvements to the ARRL Web Site
As more and more people use the new ARRL Web site, we are finding some minor bugs in the system and fixing them. Here are the latest improvements to the Web site: A link to your Section News is located right underneath the “Edit Your Profile” link at the top of the page. Just click on “Section News” and you will be directed to the appropriate page. This link is only available on the home page of the site. Users no longer have to log in each time they access the Web site. The site now remembers your log-in information and you will automatically be logged in on each visit. The DXCC standings and Honor Roll, DXCC application and the DXCC order form are now available online. You can now register hamfests and conventions on the Web site. Find an Amateur Radio licensing class or an exam session near you. In earlier versions of the Exam Session Locator Service, all exam sessions were listed as “no walk-ins.” This has now been fixed. An amateur’s current license class is now listed in the Call Sign Search. Extraneous numbers in the amateur’s FRN have also been removed. “With a Web site as large as the ARRL’s, we are constantly making improvements and changes,” said ARRL Chief Operating Officer Harold Kramer, WJ1B. “We have received a lot of feedback from members and are trying to implement many of these ideas. If we haven't gotten back to you directly, please be patient. One of our main goals at the moment is optimizing the club search function. We also understand that the Web site search function is not as
functional as we would like. In time, once the Google engines crawl through the site and catalog it, the search function should greatly improve. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work through the issues.” Reprint from the ARRL.
ARRL Field Day: Field Day Station Locator Service Returns for 2010
First introduced in 2008, the ARRL's Field Day Station Locator Service has proved a popular addition to the Field Day toolbox. This service -an interactive map that helps amateurs or those interested in Amateur Radio find a Field Day site near them -- is free to clubs or individuals who will be operating public Field Day stations. Stations can also be listed by state or province. So far, hams in all 50 states and Puerto Rico have listed Field Day sites on the Field Day Locator. If your group would like to be a part of the Station Locator Service, it's easy to get started -- just go to the Field Day Station Locator Web site and follow the instructions (this is a different link than was printed in the Field Day packets). ARRL Field Day is the most popular on-the-air operating event in Amateur Radio. On June 26-27, join tens of thousands of Amateur Radio operators as they gather for a public demonstration of the Amateur Service.

Equipment Theft
Monday afternoon my vehicle was broken into while at work--about $1,500 in gear was stolen...including all of my storm chasing/spotting gear, except the video came r a . This included three pouches containing all of my backup batteries, speaker mics, headset mics, original manuals, spare antennas and connectors and mobile power supp l i e s . The radios these were for are Yaesu models--the VX-1, V X - 5 R a n d V X - 7 R . No, they did not get any of the radios, just the equipment for them In addition they got weather instruments, two pairs of binoculars, flashlights and related gear and a few personal items. None of it is covered by insurance and I also had to pay almost $200 to get the window repaired (the driver’s side window was shattered). If anyone sees postings/opportunities to buy these types of items in the area, I'd appreciate being notified at j r i n g i n e @ g m a i l . c o m . Please spread the word Thanks! JR Reider, KØJWR
IRS; however, after 2006, such clubs had to file a Form 990-N, a simple 'electronic postcard' with minimal information, by the 15th day of the fifth month after the close of each fiscal year. Some clubs may not have been aware of this new requirement or didn't bother to comply. Even those that filed in a prior year may have neglected to keep up with the required filings as officers changed from year to year." Read more here. Reprint from ARRL
Propagation: Space Weather and Solar Storms Topics at Forum in Nation's Capital
The National Space Weather Program Council held a forum in Washington, DC earlier this week. On Tuesday, June 8 at the National Press Club, the Space Weather Enterprise Forum discussed how solar storms affect today's technological society. This is the fourth year in a row that policymakers, researchers, legislators and reporters have gathered in Washington to share ideas about space weather. This year, forum organizers sharpened the focus on critical infrastructure protection, with the ultimate goal to improve the nation's ability to prepare, mitigate and respond to potentially devastating space weather events in order to serve a broad and growing user community. According to Richard Fisher, the Sun is "waking up from a deep slumber, and in the next few years we expect to see much higher levels of solar activity. At the same time, our technological society has developed an unprecedented sensitivity to solar storms. The intersection of these two issues is what we're getting together to discuss. I believe we're on the threshold of a new era in which space weather can be as influential in our daily lives as ordinary terrestrial weather. We take this very seriously indeed." Fisher is the head of NASA's Heliophysics Division. Read more here. Reprint from ARRL

Many Radio Clubs Could Lose Tax-Exempt Status in 2010
Changes made three years ago to the federal tax laws could cause many radio clubs to lose their tax-exempt status this year. Clubs that are taxexempt under Section 501(c) of the Internal Revenue Code must file the required IRS annual returns or reports before the deadline, which is May 15 for those with calendar years. "Many clubs have, at some time in the past, applied for tax-exempt status as charitable organizations under Section 501(c)(3), as civic leagues under Section 501(c)(4) or as recreational clubs using Section 501(c)(7)," said ARRL Southwestern Division Director Marty Woll, N6VI. "Years ago, any club with gross receipts averaging less than $25,000 per year was not required to file annual returns with the
Atlantic Division to Host Webinar on How to Use the New ARRL Web Site
06/11/2010 Periodically, the ARRL’s Atlantic Division hosts a “webinar” -- an interactive Web-based seminar, designed to facilitate communication between a small number of presenters and a large remote audience using the Internet. On Tuesday, June 15 at 9 PM EDT, Atlantic Division Director Bill Edgar, N3LLR -- along with ARRL Chief Operating Officer Harold Kramer, WJ1B, ARRL Digital Content Manager Katie Glass, and Brent Robertson, KB1PYY -- will present a webinar on how to use the new ARRL Web site. Robertson is president of Fathom, the firm that designed the new site. Discussions will include the thought behind and the capabilities of the new ARRL Web site that debuted in April. Participants will learn how to do many things, including how to register for the site, how to set up your profile, how to navigate the site, how to save “favorites” and how to use other new and advanced features. Kramer, Glass and Robertson will also be taking questions from participants. Anyone can register for the webinar; you do not need to reside in the Atlantic Division to join in. Please click here to register for this informative, interactive Internet meeting. Reprint from ARRL
